Sony Was Able To Stop People Accessing Accidentally Released Stellar Blade Demo After Download

Stellar Blade is among the line of Sony’s anticipated first-party release schedule, with a demo almost a certainty as these sorts of features are becoming more standard with the ninth generation of console. However, it seems whoever is in charge of the storefront accidentally launched the Stellar Blade demo ahead of schedule, leading to people clambering to access it before it was inevitably taken down.

Wario64 on X spotted the demo was available before quickly getting taken down. Are we surprised? No, these sorts of leaks happen and normally people go relatively unscathed, but in this case, some people managed to get to the demo before it was taken down.

Shortly after Sony realized the mistake, they highlighted one of the most dangerous aspects of an all-digital, entity- exclusive game model — you don’t own what you get. Of course, this isn’t a financial hit to anyone as the demo was free to download, but the premise still survives that a service was provided and then when the Japanese game dev realized what happened, it cut the user’s ability to access the demo outright.

Do we need to remind you of the absolute disaster P.T. was? How the Konami demanded Sony not just pull the demo from getting downloaded but also not allowing people who already had in their library to redownload it? Of course, it was bound to happen that people would be affected, and it’s not like we have that long of a wait, but it certainly provides a dangerous precedent that if Sony wanted, it could just provide you with a game and decide — for no reason whatsoever — that you can’t access it anymore.
