HEX Gaming Hyper PS4 Controller Review

Hex Gaming has a wide range of great PS5 and Xbox Series S/X controllers. However, they also have some great PS4 controllers available. As an older system, the PS4 has a wider range of games than the PS5, and people know the system a bit better than the PS5. Here, we review the PS4 Hyper controller. This is one of the nicest controllers I’ve ever used and my number 1 choice for playing 3D games on the Nintendo Switch (via an 8bitdo adapter). Read on for a review of the Hex Gaming Hyper PS4 Controller.

Setup and Presentation

The controller is compatible with a wide array of devices. It follows the model set by the official PS4 controller and looks similar to other Hex Gaming PS4 controllers but is more stout and robust with shorter grips. It is still quite a big controller. It is comfortable to hold and can be used for extended play sessions. The buttons are silver with no symbols (at least they don’t use X, A, B, Y in either the Nintendo or Xbox configuration, which can be confusing). The buttons and d-pad feel good to use. The triggers are also comfortable. Overall, this is the nicest PS4 controller that I have ever used. To connect to an Android device or a Switch (via the 8bitdo adapter) you hold the PlayStation button and the share button. After a short time, it will connect. That is really all that is involved in the setup. The art on the controller is inspired by Batman’s Joker. It looks great as the pictures show.

Performance

For all the controller’s beauty and great artwork, it feels clunky to hold. The way my hand wraps around the controller doesn’t seem to be in the best position for me to feel comfortable enough to have the controller itself not be an issue. I was using the Hyper, playing F-Zero X just after I had spent a couple of hours playing Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World using a Hyperkin Super Nintendo controller. That pad felt 50% more comfortable at least. The ergonomics of the smaller pad just meant I was more responsive in performing actions when I had to quickly. On top of that, I’ve been noticing significant lag with this controller. I’ve been using it with an emulator on Android so it could be that the emulator is at fault. However, I then played Super Mario 64 with the pad, and many of the problems I was having with it were minimized. The buttons and triggers feel good.

Conclusion

Overall, the PS4 Hyper Controller from Hex Gaming is a premium PS4 controller that feels great to use and is full of great style. The ‘Joker’ artwork is top quality, and this is a controller that I would be proud to bring around a friend’s house. However, when I used it on Android, I did have some lag problems. This may not have been the fault of the controller, but I still experienced it when using the controller. The robust and large feel of the controller means that it is not my first choice when playing 2D platformers. I find that a SNES controller works much better. However, it is still a nice-looking controller and is great when playing games like FIFA, Super Mario 64, and F-Zero X. If you get the opportunity to purchase this controller, don’t pass it by as it may end up being your favourite controller in your collection.
