Sega was close to earning my respect as until recently, I was under the assumption that Sonic Generations was going to live in harmony with Sonic X Shadows Generations, which is a remaster of the 2011 Sonic game. Mixing 2D and 3D, this Sonic title is among the more loved entries, which I assume Sega is keeping close to their chest since these sorts of Sonic games have been hit-or-miss lately.
Unfortunately, I have no additional respect for Sega beyond the base level of not being a Ubisoft, as it’s been revealed that they plan on 86ing Sonic Generations as a standalone purchase in favor of the shiny new Sonic X Shadow Generations on September 9. Granted, the 2011 version of the game isn’t totally gone from the public’s grasp. Instead, it will remain up for sale within bundles of other Sonic games.
I have mixed feelings, as you can tell, as I believe people shouldn’t have to buy a bundle to experience the original game from 2011. That said, at least they are taking the preservation of the Sonic IP at least a little seriously, considering you can get it in some fashion, but I fear that this is just to save face and it will slowly stop being introduced into future bundles down the line.
I’ve said this about Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, but Sonic X Shadow Generations — just like DRDR — isn’t a replacement for the original but rather an expansion to a game that is too far away in console generations to viably add content into while making it worth the effort. New content is being dropped into this, including the inclusion of Shadow.
