Brace yourselves as Ragnarok: Fallen Legends, the turn-based card game that takes cues from an array of myths is going offline in a matter of days. Priced at only $0.99, the early access game wasn’t completely hated, but definitely didn’t succeed either. While it’s not the best game to point to in terms of the negative impacts of online-only games, it’s still an instance that proves a point.
The game will have its servers shut down on July 15, according to its official Steam page, meaning in only a few days time, the game will be entirely unplayable, despite it being a single-player experience. This is the thing I will champion until the day I die, this is the problem with games that are strictly online and even more so a problem with games that have a single-player mode.
In the instance of Ragnarok: Fallen Legends here, there should be no reason Cultivation Studio couldn’t make up a patch to make it viable to play offline for those who already have it. After all, Steam has tons of games that aren’t supported by the developer anymore, but they’re still on the platform because they can still make money off of it.
Skimming through the reviews, it seems even some of negative feedback was because of connectivity issues to their accounts. Much of the game’s appeal, though, seems hinged on its low price and generally better quality than its competitors.
I bet whatever they make next will be another interesting server-tethered game that will die two to three years later.
